DNA_Eraser_sThe data from personality tests will only help us in the long run to build better versions of ourselves. A few years ago we brought a new washing machine. The new machine ran well in the first year but one day it started to make a noise and it stop working when it reached the spin cycle. When the technician found the problem he pulled out a stripped plastic gear that was nestled in the midst of metal gears. He stated that this was a common occurrence for the model we purchased. The replacement part was a metal gear and the washer has been working great. As leaders, we need to take a step back and evaluate our team as a whole. What happens when we assigned a secret service agent type introvert to lead the new customer advocacy program? Better yet, say we just hired an energetic, boisterous, anal retentive extrovert to lead the laid back architect group. Personality tests are great tools for leaders who want to learn more about their self-awareness and how their teams are wired. We are all familiar with some of the tools such as Myers Briggs, DISC and Keirsey Temperament Sorter. These tools have been used over the years for building high performance teams, reorganization efforts and to sharpen hiring practices. Because humans have tailored these tests, there are always exceptions to the rule. In other words, you may find out that your inborn personality type may not be in alignment with your current job. So why do or don’t you excel? Well, your personality type does not dictate your success or failure in life. These tests are tools to guide, inform and foster self-awareness. Regardless of your strengths or weaknesses, ultimately you can decide to stretch out of your comfort zone and figure out how to better manage your weaknesses. With the proper mindset,  you can be strong enough to churn with the metal gears. Don’t let life strip you and grind you down! Don’t let your weaknesses get in the way of your passion!
