Self-TalkAre you talking to yourself? I have to admit, I talk to myself quite often. When I’m in the car, in my office or exercising, I’m talking to myself about solving problems, prioritizing tasks or mapping out a project. By this time you probably have at least two questions. Are you talking out loud? Do you hear voices? Yes, I’m talking out loud at times and no, I do not hear voices! By talking to myself I systematically solve many problems. However, to keep things on point, I have a few rules about talking to myself. First, I must maintain positive thoughts to avoid negative consequences. Second, I must allow myself ample quiet time alone to get in the state of flow. We need to harness some of the great ideas that are flowing in and out  of our minds. Third, I need to take notes or use a voice recorder to capture the ideas that are flying in and out of my mind. How many times have you lost a great idea or solution because you did not write it down? Lastly, don’t worry about what others are thinking or saying about you. Whether you’re at a light while driving, daydreaming at the doctor’s office or dictating in Starbucks, be secure, stay the course. The folks that are talking about you or making light of your actions are not managing your business, paying your bills or helping with college tuition!

Below is a list of areas that you can cover when talking to yourself:

  • Reinforce your beliefs & values
  • Troubleshooting problems
  • Rehearsing presentations
  • Asking for forgiveness
  • Resolving Conflict
  • Confrontation
  • Interview preparation
  • Brainstorming
  • Exercising (Motivation)
  • Making decisions
  • Improving consciousness

If we take a hard look on the inside we may find some great answers to some tough questions. When was the last time you kicked back and had some good conversation with your inner voice? If you are not talking to yourself you may be missing out on some of the best conversations in your life!
